If you’ve ever requested a manufacturing quote and gotten back a price that seemed to cover only part of what you asked for, there’s a good chance the mix-up came down to one thing: PCB assembly and box build assembly are not the same service, even though they’re often mentioned in the same breath.

Understanding the difference — and knowing which one your project actually needs — will save you time, prevent scope surprises, and help you compare quotes from contract manufacturers on an apples-to-apples basis.

PCB Assembly: Building the Board

PCB assembly (often shortened to PCBA) is the process of populating a bare printed circuit board with electronic components — resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, connectors, and so on — using surface mount technology (SMT), through-hole technology (THT), or a mix of both.

At the end of a PCB assembly run, what you have is a finished, tested circuit board. It’s a critical piece of your product, but it’s still just one piece. A populated board on its own usually can’t be shipped to a customer or dropped into the field — it needs a housing, a power source, wiring to other components, and a way for a user to actually interact with it.

Typical PCB assembly deliverables include:

  • Bare board procurement or fabrication coordination
  • Component sourcing and kitting
  • SMT and/or THT placement and soldering
  • Automated optical inspection (AOI) and functional testing of the board itself
  • Rework and repair as needed

Box Build Assembly: Building the Product

Box build assembly — sometimes called electro-mechanical assembly — picks up where PCB assembly leaves off. It’s the process of integrating one or more assembled circuit boards into a complete enclosure or chassis, along with everything else that turns a board into a finished, deployable product.

That “everything else” is often the part OEMs underestimate. A box build project can include:

  • Component sourcing for power supplies, relays, sensors, switches, connectors, and enclosures — not just PCB-level parts
  • Cable and wire harness assembly connecting the PCB to sensors, displays, motors, and other sub-assemblies
  • Sub-assembly integration, such as control panels, power distribution units, and communication modules
  • System-level assembly, making sure every mechanical and electrical piece works together as a single unit
  • Software installation and configuration, when the finished product needs to leave the shop deployment-ready
  • Functional, performance, and environmental testing of the complete unit, not just the board
  • Packaging, labeling, and shipping of a product that’s ready to use the moment it arrives

In short: PCB assembly answers the question “is the board built correctly?” Box build assembly answers the question “is the product ready to use?”

Why This Distinction Matters for Your Quote

Mixing up these two services — or assuming one automatically includes the other — is one of the most common sources of scope confusion between OEMs and contract manufacturers. Here’s where it tends to cause problems.

Scope gaps. If you request a “PCB assembly quote” but actually need a finished, enclosed product, you may get a number that only covers the board. The wiring harnesses, enclosure integration, sub-assembly work, and final testing — often the most labor-intensive parts of the project — end up as a separate, unbudgeted conversation later.

Apples-to-oranges comparisons. When you’re evaluating multiple manufacturing partners, a “box build” quote from one company and a “PCB assembly” quote from another can look wildly different in price for reasons that have nothing to do with efficiency or quality. Always confirm exactly what’s included before comparing numbers.

Hidden coordination costs. If your PCB assembler and your box build assembler are two different companies, someone has to manage the handoff: shipping boards between facilities, reconciling two sets of quality documentation, and troubleshooting issues that could originate on either side. That coordination takes time and adds risk, even when both vendors do good individual work.

Timeline impact. Splitting PCB assembly and box build assembly across two vendors typically means two separate lead times, two separate queues, and two separate shipping legs stacked in sequence instead of one continuous production flow.

When You Only Need PCB Assembly

Not every project needs a full box build. If you’re prototyping, if the board is a component going into someone else’s larger assembly, or if your team handles final integration in-house, a standalone PCB assembly service is the right — and more cost-effective — choice.

When You Need Box Build Assembly

If your end product is something a customer or field technician will actually pick up, install, or operate — a control panel, a diagnostic device, a battery system, a piece of connected equipment — you need box build assembly, whether or not you say those exact words when you request a quote. Any project that ends with “a finished thing in an enclosure” falls into this category.

  3. Do you need a single point of accountability for quality across the entire build, from bare board to finished unit?
